What Does This Mean for You?

The ACA requires most insurance plans to cover essential breastfeeding services, such as lactation counseling and breastfeeding supplies like pumps, at no cost to you. In addition, Massachusetts’ new maternal health law goes a step further by recognizing International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) as key providers for postpartum care, including breastfeeding support.

How Does Insurance Reimbursement Work at NEBS?

While New England Breastfeeding Solutions is currently out-of-network for all insurance providers, we make the process of reimbursement as simple and stress-free as possible.

Here’s how it works:

  • After your session with one of our licensed IBCLCs, we will provide you with a superbill. This document contains all the necessary information, such as the service codes and provider details, that your insurance company needs to process your claim.

  • We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your visit to confirm your plan’s coverage for out-of-network lactation services. Each policy is different, so it’s always a good idea to get clarity upfront.

Simple Steps to Get Reimbursed

  1. Check Your Coverage: Call your insurance company to ask about your plan’s benefits for out-of-network lactation services provided by an IBCLC.

  2. Receive Your Superbill: After your visit, we’ll give you everything you need to file a claim for reimbursement.

  3. Submit the Claim: Follow your insurance provider’s process for submitting out-of-network claims.

  4. Get Reimbursed: After submitting the claim, you’ll be reimbursed according to your plan’s guidelines.
